The photocell-slit system can also be used in a constant-velocity mode, where the required input signal is a rectangular waveform. The velocity generator produces this function from a photocell and double slits, which triggers a bistable circuit [4]. This circuit can be designed so that the symmetry of the rectangular wave can be changed, to obtain different velocities in the forward and backward directions. The feedback system makes it possible to generate any desired velocity waveform from the corresponding voltage signal.
