It is anticipated that the NCI may assist in these steps, as well as facilitating access to compound and natural product extract libraries, and the preclinical development of any promising leads discovered through the process. The ultimate goals envisaged are the creation of an integrated, cohesive drug discovery program and early clinical trials system that is founded on mechanistic-based approaches, and to make emerging knowledge of cancer biology the basis for drug discovery, development and testing.
The rapid progress made in the elucidation of mechanisms underlying human diseases has resulted in a proliferation of molecular targets availablefor potential drug treatment. The adaptation of these targets to high throughput screening processes has greatly expanded the potential for drug discovery. 7).
